World Cancer Day is a global observance that helps raise people’s awareness of cancer and how to prevent, detect or treat it. This event is held on February 4 each year.

Comfort bags include things like a teddy bear, knitted hat, scarf, pen and stationery, pillow, hand sanitizer wipes, lip gloss, body lotion, baby powder, a bag for aromatherapy and a prayer angel.

Some items like the teddy bear are simply for emotional comfort. Others fill a need -- the socks, the hat and scarf -- that newcomers to chemotherapy often don't realize they will have.

While the items in the bag are welcome, the most important element of the gift "is knowing that someone cares."

This group is intended primarily for the Ladysmith area and surrounds, but please feel free to still join in and then arrange collection points in your own area for your Hospice, Cancer Centre or Oncology Hospital.

Donations of handmade or bought items are welcome and will be given to Hospice to be gifted to patients free of any charge.

Please deliver to Foto First, 180 Murchison Street, Ladysmith, on or before 4 February 2011.

There is a group called Chemocaps that donate their time by making hand knit caps for cancer patients and contributing in a good cause.
